Licence restrictions on ebooks are established by the publisher. For instance, the library may only acquire ebooks that have an institutional license and not individually licensed ebooks, such as Amazon/Kindle and Barnes & Noble/Nook. Ebooks with institutional licenses range from single user to unlimited user. Some ebooks have even further restrictions like limits on the number of pages that may be printed, emailed, saved or downloaded, or may only be opened on mobile devices in certain apps like Bluefire Reader.

The library defaults to purchasing electronic copies of books, if available. For Course Reserves, the library will attempt to purchase the ebook license with the most generous terms possible to accommodate a high volume of use.
