Using the Library

The New School Libraries provide access to physical and digital research materials both on and off campus as well as technology within Library spaces.  Please click on a service below to find more information.

Access & Borrowing

  • What do I have access to?

    Find out what Library services you can access based on your status or relationship with The New School.

  • Loan Periods & Fines

    Discover how long you can borrow different Library materials and what fines will apply when returning materials past the due date.

  • New School Library Borrowing

    Borrowing privileges from all The New School Library locations including Inter-Library Loans.

  • Renew & Return

    Learn more about returning and renewing library materials checked out from The New School libraries.

  • Inter-Library Loan

    The New School Library patrons can request items from other libraries through our Inter-Library Loan (ILL) services.

  • Electronic Materials

    Access to online databases, journals, newspapers, e-books, and other digital materials.

  • Consortium Libraries

    New School degree-seeking students, current faculty, and visiting scholars have access to Cooper Union Library, NYU’s Bobst Library, New York School of Interior Design Library, New York Academy of Art, and the New-York Historical Society Library

  • Collaboration Rooms

    Reserve collaboration rooms in two of our Library locations: the University Center or the List Center Library.

Library Technology

  • Public Computers

    iMacs are available in the List Center Library & University Center Library for anyone with building access.

  • On-Campus WiFi

    Access to WiFi while in Library locations is provided by New School IT. Any issues with WiFi on campus should be reported to New School IT.

  • Printing & Scanning

    B&W printing and high quality color scanning available in all Library locations. Alumni, Guests, and Visiting Scholars will need to purchase a Vend-a-Card to print.

  • Laptop Loans

    PC laptops can be checked out for up to 8 hours at the University Center Library.
