To request a specific item from the library catalog designated “Special Collections,” email to schedule an appointment to consult that item in The New School Archives and Special Collections reading room. Please include the title of the item or a link to the catalog record in your email. 


Items designated “Special Collections” cannot be borrowed from the libraries. Appointments for individuals are scheduled between Monday and Friday, depending on staff availability. The reading room is located at 66 Fifth Avenue, at the lobby level (Sheila Johnson Design Center) in Room N102. Because all Special Collections items are stored offsite, please provide a minimum of two weeks advance notice to ensure delivery of your requested items.


New School faculty can schedule appointments for classes to consult Special Collections items in the University Center Library. Two weeks advance notice is required for class visits. Please contact to discuss options, or complete this Instruction Request Form


You do not have to be a New School student, faculty member or staff member to request a Special Collections appointment. Special Collections items are available to any researcher, regardless of affiliation.
