Reuben Abel papers

These papers document the academic career of Reuben Abel (1911-1997), beginning with his education as an undergraduate student at Columbia College and doctoral philosophy student in the Graduate Faculty of the New School for Social Research, and continuing throughout his professorship at the university. It includes course notes and syllabi from his academic work, and correspondence and other material documenting his student activities, such as his role as founder and editor of the New School student magazine, 12th Street: A Quarterly, and later his membership in the Alumni Association. Abel's papers reflect his position within the Graduate Faculty, consisting of correspondence with colleagues and deans, appointment letters, faculty minutes, and committee documents; in addition to his role as instructor and advisor to students, consisting of lecture notes, thesis committee work and doctoral exam requirement reviews. Affiliations as a scholar found in his papers include the Conference on Methods in Philosophy and Sciences and the American Society for Aesthetics. Contains one annotated typscript of his work,Man Is the Measure.

Hannah Arendt New School faculty files

Hannah Arendt was University Professor in Philosophy from 1967-1975 in The New School's Graduate Faculty (later, New School for Social Research). These records stem from her work as professor and advisor to students, and her involvement with the Tenure Committee. Student files consist of transcripts, writing samples, resumes, referral requests, grant applications and correspondence, among other documents involved in graduate student admissions. Seth Benardete lecture audio recordings

The Seth Benardete lecture audio recordings collection consists of audio files of lectures given by the classics scholar and philosopher in his classes at the New School and New York University. There are no recordings from Benardete's City University of New York lectures present in this collection. The lectures represent Benardete's courses on classical philosophy on subjects such as the works of Plato and Aristotle, among others. Each entry in the finding aid represents a series of cassette tape recordings covering the semester-long duration of that course. Unless otherwise indicated, the entry titles reflect the official course names and numbers as listed in the New School Graduate Faculty Bulletin. The recordings were made by Benardete's students, David Blankensip, Bernard Jacobs, Richard Hartzman, and Kamyar Faroohar on cassette recorder.

These papers contain drafts, outlines, notes, and manuscripts authored by Horace Meyer Kallen (bulk 1930s-1960s), documenting his career as a founding professor of philosophy at the New School for Social Research (1919-1974). His papers also contain writings by others and research material in the form of offprints and printed journals. Many topics center around religion and his work with Jewish organizations, such as the World Jewish Council and Farband-Labor Zionist Order during the 1950s-1960s.

New School for Social Research Office of the Dean records

These records originate from the New School for Social Research Dean’s Office and its predecessor school, the Graduate Faculty of Political and Social Science (in its early years, also referred to as the University in Exile). The records relate to departmental matters, including accreditation, budgeting, curriculum development and faculty affairs. There is correspondence of deans with academic departments within the division, including Anthropology, Economics, Gender Studies, Historical Studies, Master of Arts Liberal Studies (MALS), Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology. Documentation will also be found for centers and institutes supported by the division, including the Center for Studies of Social Change (CSSC), the Schwartz Center for Eonomic Policy Analysis (SCEPA) and the Transregional Center for Democratic Studies (TCDS). Routine business between departmental chairs and deans include curriculum development, faculty appointments, fellowships and program accreditation.
