The Picture Collection contains a variety of interesting and educational plates and pictures. An important visual resource for both faculty and students, it contains approximately 65,000 pictures and reproductions selected from a variety of publications.
The Picture Collection Index, available in the Picture Collection, the Gimbel & Fogelman Library Reference Desk and On-Line, contains all subject headings. The index is an essential tool for discovering cross referenced subjects and identifying specific categories.
Subject Categories range alphabetically from ACCESSORIES to ZODIAC, and most subjects have specific sub categories to further define the image (i.e. Artists- Da Vinci, Leonardo). Subject headings include ARCHITECTURE, ARTISTS, and COSTUME, as well as general topical subjects for image research.
Pictures may be borrowed with a valid New School University ID card. There is a limit of 20 pictures at any one time and 10 pictures per category. The loan period is 2 weeks, however, faculty may request an extension of up to one month. Consortium members may use the collection on-site but no borrowing privileges are granted.
The fine for lost or damaged pictures is $2.00 per plate.
Copy photography equipment is available for producing slides of Picture Collection and Library materials. Reservations are required and can be made at the circulation desk. Instructional literature is available to guide patrons in use of the equipment.
The Gimbel Library staff is not responsible for copy equipment malfunctions or film results.
