Scope and Contents note

These files consist of materials produced by and about a number of arts and culture courses, exhibitions, initiatives, and public programs at The New School between 1931 and 2008. It should be noted that the materials here represent just a handful of the many and varied arts and cultural activities at The New School during this period. Two thirds of the materials here relate to the New School Art Center, documenting a very active exhibition program from 1960 through 1973. New School Art Collection materials largely concern The New School murals. The New School Bulletins contain descriptions of fine and applied art courses and workshops, 1938 to 1968.

Series I. New School Art Center 1948-1978  (Bulk, 1961-1975)

The New School Art Center was established in the fall of 1960 with a donation by the Albert J. List Foundation, and remained in operation until 1973. The Center's original mission statement laid out its ambitious project:

[The Art Center] represent[s] a continuing effort by the New School for Social Research to manifest its interest in art as a major endeavor of man and society. The Art Center embraces no particular movement or group, but serves as a forum for all noteworthy expression by artists of this and other nations. It attempts to make its own unique contribution to the cultural life of New York City, rather than to duplicate efforts of the many excellent art institutions in this community.

Directed throughout its existence by Paul Mocsanyi, the Center's programs were geared toward students, professional artists and critics, and "an enlightened public." Mocsanyi mounted exhibitions year-round, organizing lectures, films, and other events that explored and expanded upon exhibit themes. Striving to embody The New School's founding commitment to openly engage with progressive, provocative subjects, exhibitions often revolved around contemporary political and social issues.

Materials here include exhibition catalogs, press coverage, posters, flyers and other publicity, administrative correspondence, and photographs. A small amount of files document Mocsanyi's earlier career.

Series III. New School Associates circa 1936-1966, 1977-1988

The activity of the New School Associates, an extra-institutional organization of alumni and supporters of the school, dates back to the earliest years of The New School. In a membership appeal (probably dating from the 1940s), Alvin Johnson, the New School president whose vision guided the school from 1922 through 1945, described the group in the following way:

"The New School Associates were the first organ of the New School. At the outset there was no Board, no Faculty, but an association of interested persons bent on founding an educational institution which should serve the needs of intelligent men and women like ourselves... We realized that in the original body of Associates we had the nucleus of a lay organization superior to any alumni group. The Associates could protect the institution against the prevalent academic maladies of inbreeding and dry rot, maladies rather aggravated than cured by alumni. We sought to enlist Associates from all walks of life. For as a lay organ the Associates could not, like college alumni limit themselves to negative functions but would have to play a constructive part in the development of the School... Only the New School Associates, who cared enough for the institution to become contributors to its support, ever exhibited continuity of interest and exerted influence on the development of the School... We live in trying times and must look forward to still more trying times, with powerful political forces seeking to regiment our thinking and speech and action. The protection of our American liberty to teach and write as truth commands lies first in our consciences but second in the sound public opinion of an active body of New School Associates."

The group sponsored programs and remained an active fund raising organ at least through the late 1950s. Material from the late 1970s and 1980s here consists of announcements and publicity for New School exhibitions, lectures, and other events. A file of reports and statements includes a 1952 statement by New School president Hans Simon addressing questions of academic freedom and efforts to establish "protection against Communist infiltration" at the school.
