Summary
After graduating from Parsons School of Design in 1943, Andrée Golbin (1923-2006) led a long career as a painter, graphic artist and illustrator. In addition to serving as art director for Mademoiselle magazine in the early 1950s, Golbin created artwork for a diverse roster of clients, including several modern dance companies, Henri Bendel, and American Cyanamid. The Kellen Design Archives holds examples of Golbin's drawings and completed projects in the form of book jackets, children's books, catalogs, and assorted promotional materials.

Biographical note

Ruth Andrée Golbin (she later omitted Ruth) was born in Leipzig, Germany in 1923. She immigrated to the United States and, in 1943, graduated with a degree in Advertising Art from Parsons School of Design. She also studied at the Art Students League, the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts, and the New School for Social Research. In 1979, Golbin returned to Parsons as a drawing instructor.

Golbin worked as an art director for Mademoiselle magazine, a painter, and a book and magazine illustrator. She contributed artwork to a number of children's books as well as to the  New York Times gardening section. She specialized in abstract paintings and realistic illustrations of the natural world.

Andrée Golbin died in 2006.

Scope and Contents of Collection

The collection includes artwork, biographical materials, clippings, and printed materials. Artwork in the collection consists exclusively of commercial illustrations for children's books, newspapers, and magazines in pen, marker and watercolors. The Illustrations series also includes reversals.

Printed materials and publications include a variety of brochures, catalogs and pamphlets; magazine clippings; posters and mailers; and a set of Christmas greeting cards, in addition to illustrated books for which Golbin contributed drawings. Clients range from American Cyanamid (marketing Formica) and the American Bilt-Rite Rubber Corporation to Henri Bendel and other fashion-related firms. Golbin also created promotional materials for the Alwin Nikolais, Erick Hawkins, and Murray Louis dance companies. Her work for Mademoiselle magazine is represented by folders, posters, and proofs promoting advertising in the publication and the magazine's College Clinics in the 1950s.
