It should be noted that the materials here represent just a handful of the many and varied arts and cultural activities at The New School during this period. Two thirds of the materials here relate to the New School Art Center, documenting a very active exhibition program from 1960 through 1973. New School Art Collection materials largely concern The New School murals. The New School Bulletins contain descriptions of fine and applied art courses and workshops, 1938 to 1968.

Series I. New School Art Center 1948-1978
(Bulk, 1961-1975)
The New School Art Center was established in the fall of 1960 with a donation by the Albert J. List Foundation, and remained in operation until 1973. The Center's original mission statement laid out its ambitious project:
Directed throughout its existence by Paul Mocsanyi, the Center's programs were geared toward students, professional artists and critics, and "an enlightened public." Mocsanyi mounted exhibitions year-round, organizing lectures, films, and other events that explored and expanded upon exhibit themes. Striving to embody The New School's founding commitment to openly engage with progressive, provocative subjects, exhibitions often revolved around contemporary political and social issues. Materials here include exhibition catalogs, press coverage, posters, flyers and other publicity, administrative correspondence, and photographs. A small amount of files document Mocsanyi's earlier career. |

Series III. New School Associates circa 1936-1966, 1977-1988
The activity of the New School Associates, an extra-institutional organization of alumni and supporters of the school, dates back to the earliest years of The New School. In a membership appeal (probably dating from the 1940s), Alvin Johnson, the New School president whose vision guided the school from 1922 through 1945, described the group in the following way:
The group sponsored programs and remained an active fund raising organ at least through the late 1950s. Material from the late 1970s and 1980s here consists of announcements and publicity for New School exhibitions, lectures, and other events. A file of reports and statements includes a 1952 statement by New School president Hans Simon addressing questions of academic freedom and efforts to establish "protection against Communist infiltration" at the school. |
