Biographical note
Originally from Omaha, Nebraska, Marion Reed attended a course taught at the Paris Ateliers of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now, Parsons The New School for Design) in the summer of 1927. The course began on July 11 with a series of lectures by Frank Alvah Parsons. Other lecturers and tour guides included faculty members Henry Davenport, Marion Eaton, Grace Fakes, Edith Henderson, Harriette Palmer, and Clifford Hamilton Preston. In addition to attending lectures, Reed and her classmates toured châteaux, museums, and cathedrals in France. On these tours, students learned about local history and decorative and architectural styles.
Scope and Contents of Collection
Consists of a single student notebook maintained by Marion Reed. The notebook resembles a clip book, containing lecture notes, diary-like entries on the weather and Reed's impressions of France, and illustrative postcards and clippings. Topics addressed include the history of art in France and prevalent decorative styles from the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries. Class handouts include lists of terms used by lecturers and symbols found in Gothic art.
Arrangement note
The notebook was divided into three folders during processing. Folders are arranged chronologically, reflecting their position within the original notebook.
