Biographical note
Walter Stein was born in New York in 1924. He studied at the Art Students League, Cooper Union, the New School for Social Research, and New York University -- all in New York -- and the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. He was a faculty member of the Foundation Program at Parsons School of Design, where he taught life drawing to first-year students. Stein died in 1981.
Scope and Contents of Collection
Consists of 28 watercolor illustrations depicting plants, animals, women, and small, inanimate objects, such as a ball of yarn and bones. The illustrations were published alongside poems by Emily Dickinson in For Love of Her (Clarkson N. Potter, 1974). In the forward to the book, Stein discusses the process by which he selected subjects to accompany the poems. Stein initialled and dated most of the illustrations; however, inexplicably, some post-date the publication of the book in which they appear.
Some of the illustrations were exhibited at Gimbel Library in the months of October and November, 1975.
