The Scherman Music Library supports degree and diploma programs offered by the Mannes College The New School for Music, as well as the rest of The New School and Mannes' non-degree programs in the Extension and Prepartory Divisions.. The growing collection is strong in music theory, scores and performing editions of the classical repertoire. The collection numbers 8,000 books, 30,000 scores, 9,000 recordings, 300 video recordings, many music-related periodical titles, specialized databases, and electronic resources.

The Music Scores are divided into four sections, and shelved in separate areas:
| Full score (folio or F.Sc.): conductors' score, no parts |
| Miniature (min): small study score |
| Music: performing scores with parts |
| Reference (ref or ref.m): do not circulate |
Most musical scores are classified in broad categories based on the Dewey Decimal system, i.e.:

| Listening Rooms |
The listening room contains turntables, compact disc players and cassette decks. The equipment is to be used only for listening to library recordings, CDs, or recital tapes. Students may listen up to five (5) recordings at a time, and up to two (2) pairs of headphones for shared listening. Students may use recordings and headphones inside the library only. Faculty may check out recordings up to three (3) hours for use in class. Recordings are to be returned immediately after the class to the Circulation Desk to ensure their availability for everyone. Headphones are available at the Circulation Desk.
The duplication of recordings on library equipment is forbidden under U.S. copyright law. Under no circumstances can you tape recordings on the library equpiment.
The listening room closes 15 minutes before the library does. |
| Computing Resources |
| The computer stations located within the Scherman Library are provided for access to the on-line catalog, databases, and the Internet. Printer services are also available for $0.10 per page.
There are Internet terminals provided for e-mail and casual surfing located in the student lounge on the 5th Floor of the Mannes building, as well in the computer lab on the 6th Floor for word processing and advanced computer application.
Computers are also available for student use at the University Computer Center, 55 West 13th Street.

| Photocopying |
Photocopies cost from $0.10-$0.20 each. The machines accept nickels, dimes, quarters, $1.00 and $5.00 dollar bills. |
