Course Reserves

The University Libraries offer all New School faculty the opportunity to place library materials on reserve for their students at each of the three libraries or via electronic reserves. In order to accommodate the high volume of reserve materials processed each semester, please note the following:

Reserve requests are processed in the order in which they are received.
Processing time may take up to 3 weeks, so please make your request as soon as possible.
Due to space restrictions, a limit of up to 25 items may be placed on reserve for a single class.
Please limit reserve requests to required readings only
Reference books and journal volumes/issues may not be placed on reserve.
All items on reserve will be removed at the end of each semester.
You may review all items on reserve for your class by connecting to BobCat, at http://www.bobcat.nyu.edu/

Reserve items may be checked out for 2 hours

Placing Library Materials on Reserve

Please complete the online request form for all books to be placed on reserve. You may also print out the paper reserve request form and bring it to the library in which you will place your reserve materials.

Each book being requested for reserves must include a complete citation (author, title, publisher, date of publication/edition).

Materials held in one of the three New School Libraries will be placed on reserve and placed on reserve in the location you select on the request form. If the book you request is not available in any of the three libraries, we will initiate a request to purchase the book.

For these requests, please note the following:

Each request will be considered individually to determine if the item requested is within the Libraries' collecting scope.
Items purchased must also be cataloged and processed. Thus, it will generally take an additional 2-3 weeks to have the item available for your students. Please allow extra time for this.
The Libraries may purcahse only items that are required reading and thus may not be able to purchase all titles you are recomending. We will make every effort to accommodate your needs.
The library does not purchase text books in any subject area.

Please note that many out-of-print titles may be difficult to purchase. In these cases, you may prefer to place a personal copy on reserve, or to place photocopies of relevant chapters in a course packet.

All books will be removed from reserves and returned to the stacks at the end of each semester.

Placing Personal Copies of Books on Reserve

If you wish to place a title on reserve that is out of print, beyond the Libraries' collecting scope, or otherwise unobtainable, you are welcome to place personal copies on reserve by completing a reserve request form and delivering the items to the reserve desk at the appropriate library. (Alternatively, you may complete an online reserve request form and deliver the items to the appropriate library at a later date.)

Please bring the books to the appropriate reserve desk, along with the reserve request form . (Alternatively, you may use the online reserve request form , and bring the books down to us afterwards.)

Personal items will be removed from reserves and available for pickup at the end of each semester. If your items have not been retrieved by the beginning of the following semester, we will consider them a donation to the library and either add them to the collection or dispose of them.

Placing Course Packets on Reserve

Faculty may create course packets to place on reserve. Course packets are a useful way to provide students with access to selected journal articles, book chapters, and other documents.

Course packets must be submitted with the following items:

Course Packet Reserve Request form
3-ring binder contining:
Photocopied Materials (3-hole punched)

Copy of course syllabus

Please bring course packets with the above items to the appropriate reserve desk. Course Packets generally take 2-3 days to process and make available to your students.

All course packets will be removed at the end of each semester, and may be retrieved from the libraries. If not retrieved prior to the beginning of the following semester, course packets will be returned to you in care of your department.
