| The New School Library Electronic Reserves System provides access to course-related reading via the Internet for students enrolled in particular courses. To access the electronic reserves system, students and faculty should go to the following URL: http://ereserves.newschool.edu Once there, look up the reserve reading by instructor name, department, course name or number. Access to the course pages is password protected. Instructors should inform the students enrolled in their classes of the password for each class. For copyright reasons, passwords are not to be shared with persons not enrolled in a particular class.
| Appropriate E-Reserve Materials |
Materials to be placed on electronic reserve must be in the legal possession of the Library or the instructor. Materials must meet the following criteria:
Clear readable text |
Single sided copies |
Each document gathered with a paper clip - not stapled |
Complete pages (no top or bottom lines etc. cut off) |
Accompanied by copies of the title and copyright pages along with book chapters |
A minimum of black space around each page |
Instructor provided electronic versions of documents should meet the same readability standards. |
Materials to be placed on reserve must be accompanied by a list of complete bibliographic citations sorted by class session. |
| |
| Audio and Video Multimedia Services |
DVDs and CDs can be streamed using the Library's QuickTime Streaming Service within the electronic reserves environment. Permissions for audio and video streaming usually take 4-6 weeks to secure. All materials to be streamed will either have the permission of the rights holder or will be deemed to qualify as fair use under the provisions of the TEACH Act (in the case of online classes).
In order to submit a request for audio or video streaming, the reserves department observes the following guidelines:
A request of the full work title, with publication year must be emailed to ereserves@newschool.edu along with the week/dates the faculty member wishes to display the video/audio |
In the case of audio recordings, faculty must provide the following information:
Title of complete work; for classical pieces, include composer and work nos.
If necessary, title of subsection(s): movement, song, aria, track listing, etc.
If a specific performance is desired, names of performers
If a specific recording is desired, title of album and copyright date |
All recordings in the library's music databases and video databases may be used in the e-reserves environment and within course systems |
Audio recordings of lectures and other self-produced material require a release to be on file with the reserves department in either email or printed form |
Some streaming licenses require library ownership of multimedia materials. Others will allow personal copies to be digitized. If a copy cannot be acquired by the library or the requested title is outside of the collection development scope of the library, the reserves department may request to use a personal copy |
Licensed materials must be renewed from semester to semester |
DVDs, VHS tapes, and MiniDV tapes are best to digitize. Quicktime formatted video files can also be accommodated. The higher the resolution in original format, the better the quality of streamed content. |
Links to media already existing online (i.e. YouTube, Hulu, etc.) can also be included as part of electronic reserves |
Multimedia will not be used from CDs or DVDs accompanying textbooks without the consent of the textbook publisher and rights holder of the original work |
Audio or video recordings from the Avery Fisher Center or another consortium library cannot be digitized |
| |
| Fair Use Limitations |
Materials must qualify under the fair use exemption (Section 107) of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976. Accordingly, materials placed on electronic reserve:
May not exceed 20% of the larger work (book, journal, monograph, etc.) from which the excerpt has been taken |
May be comprised of unlimited URL's to freely-accessible web content |
May be comprised of unlimited articles available in the Library's online databases |
May be comprised of materials in the public domain (published prior to 1923 or U.S. Government publications) |
May be comprised of materials for which the faculty member is the copyright holder (writings, PowerPoint files, class notes, syllabi, etc.) |
