Accessing Library Electronic Resources Off-Campus

All library electronic resources are available to students on and off campus using the authentication schemes decribed below. Be advised that some resources may not work when the user is behind a corporate firewall. Corporate firewalls must allow http and https (sometimes called secure http) to the desktop of the user requesting a library resource.

Pop-up blocker on some browser systems can also prohibit students from accessing certain databases (particularly image databases such as ARTSTOR or AMICA). Pop-up blocker must be turned off or exceptions should be made to the libproxy.newschool.edu domain. For further instructions on this, visit our Frequently Asked Questions section to address this issue.

Using the Library Website

When accessing electronic resources from the University Library Wesbite, patrons will need their GroupWise NetID and password. This is the preferred manner of access, particularly if you use refworks and its associated Microsoft Word plug-in, Write-N-Cite.

New School NetID (sometimes called GroupWise NetID) accounts are available to all matriculating students, as well as faculty and staff, These accounts are automatically generated for students- students need only show a validated New School ID at the UCC (University Computing Center at 55 W.13th street). Faculty and staff must request the account at the UCC, and the account will be created within 3 business days. After the three day period, faculty should return to the UCC to sign their User Services Agreement and receive their account information.

When a patron clicks on a link to a database from the library website, they will be asked for their New School ID and password. Simply log in to the library website and the proxy service will take you to the requested database.

Using the University Portal

Users can also authenticate through the University Portal (located at http://www.online.newschool.edu). Once logged in, a patron should click on the link "University Library/Electronic Resources" and they will be taken to the Library's electronic resources page. This page carries over 200 links to electronic resources meant to aid online research. The advantage to this authentication scheme is that students do not have to apply for an additional account. Be advised that this method of authentication does not work with the refworks Microsoft Word plug-in, write-n-cite.
