Inter-Library Loan Policies

Inter-Library Loan is a library service where the patron of one library may borrow
from the collection of materials from another library.

Obtaining Materials from Other Libraries
When looking for a particular item, first check BobCat to determine if the item is held in a New School or Consortium library.

If the item is in BobCat, but is currently being used by another patron, place a Recall Request for the item:

  1. Locate the item in BobCat
  2. Click on the green “Recall/Request” button Hold or Recall an Item

3. Log in to your patron account and provide all
requested information

4. An email will be sent when the item is ready to pick up. Most
items will be returned and available for you to pick up within one week

If the item is not in BobCat, the following methods are available to help find it:

Check the New York City Public Library Catalogs
Obtain a METRO Card from the New School Libraries to have reading access to the requested material
Place an Inter-Library Loan (ILL) request

Checking the NYC Public Library Catalogs

NYC has four extensive public library systems, and it is likely that the material can be found here:

  NYPL Branch Libraries Catalog

  NYPL Research Libraries Catalog

  Brooklyn Public Library Catalog

  Queens Public Library Catalog

Obtain a METRO referral card from a New School Reference Librarian

If the item needed is not in BobCat, and is not available from the public libraries, it may be possible to get a pass that grants limited access (reading privileges) to another library in the city.

METRO referral cards are good for a single visit to another library
A specific book must be identified which is located in the library you wish to visit
The item can only be used in the library; they will not allow it to be taken out
Take a photo ID, along with the METRO card
Please see a reference librarian at one of the New School libraries for help

Place An Inter-Library Loan Request
If the item is located outside of the Metropolitan area, the item may be obtainable via Interlibrary Loan. ILL allows us to borrow items from participating libraries around the world.

All ILL requests are processed by NYU-Bobst Library
Graduate Students and Faculty may place their requests online directly at the NYU ILL web site
Graduate Students are limited to 5 requests per day
Undergraduates must first consult with an NSU Reference Librarian to discuss their research needs
Items held in the BobCat catalog may not be requested via ILL; if the item is on loan, you must place a Recall/Request for it.
For more information, please read the FAQ
