Borrower Registration

All New School students, faculty, administrators and staff must show a current University ID card to gain access to and borrow from the New School libraries. Faculty, Administrators, and students in degree programs may also borrow materials from and other Consortium libraries.

See the Access and Borrowing Matrix for further detail on who may use consortium resources.

IDs must be activated at a library of the user's "home" institution before it can be used at another Consortium library.

New School students, faculty and staff have their barcodes printed on their New School ID Campus Cards.

Other Consortium borrowers must register at the libraries of their "home institutions".

Returning Library Materials

All materials should be returned to the library from which you borrowed them in good condition. Return books to the circulation desk or the book drop outside the library on or before the due date stamped in the back of the book.

Renewing Library Materials

Open stack books may be renewed twice, unless another borrower has requested the book. Overdue fines must be paid before you can renew a book. Reserve books may not be renewed. Convenient ways to renew books: You can renew books without having the books in hand. Stop by the Circulation Desk with your valid student I.D. and we'll renew your books (except Reserves and 2-hour-loan items).

You can also renew books over the telephone or over the Web (through BobCat). Have your student ID in hand, because your barcode number & student ID number will be needed.

View your library record in BobCat. You can now view your library record in BobCat. Check the correctness of your name, address, phone number; items checked out to you and their due dates, items on hold; and fines.

Lost Library Materials

Library material not returned within 50 days of the due date or recalled material not returned within 10 days of the first recall notice are assumed to be lost and are subject to replacement costs. A replacement bill consists of:

  1. 1.

    The actual replacement cost of the item - if the item can be replaced. In the event that a replacement cost cannot be determined, a $100 fee per item will be assessed;

    2. A $15.00 processing fee.

As our computer-generated bills reflect only approximate costs, please contact the Circulation Department of the appropriate library to resolve problems with lost, stolen, or long overdue books. Library delinquencies may result in suspension of borrowing privileges, withholding of grades and degree, and possible legal action.

Placing Library Holds on Returned Materials

If you cannot locate a book on the shelf, check in BOBCAT, the online catalog, to see if someone else has borrowed the book. If the book is on loan, you may recall the item via BOBCAT to be held for you when it is returned. When the book comes back, we will notify you and hold the book for you at the Circulation Desk.

Change of Address

Since you are obligated to respond to overdue, recall, and fine notices, please inform the Library of any change of address and/or telephone changes. YOU ARE LIABLE FOR FINES AND PROCESSING FEES WHETHER OR NOT MAILED NOTICES OR BILLS ARE RECEIVED.

Library Assisted Searches for Materials

If you cannot locate a book on the shelf even though the BobCat status is "Available", you may request at the Circulation Desk that we search for the book. Searches are done regularly. If we locate a book, we will notify you, and hold the book at the Circulation Desk. If the book cannot be located, ask at the Reference Desk about finding the item through other means.
