Historical note

The Center for Studies of Social Change (CSSC) in the Department of Historical Studies, Graduate Faculty--later known as the New School for Social Research--was founded in 1984 by Charles Tilly, who acted as its director through 1995.

The mission of the Center was to support student and faculty research on large-scale social change, and to create a forum for promoting social scientific history. It has produced a series of working papers over the years, some of which are published electronically at Columbia University Press's CIAO website.
