Biographical Note

Adrienne Marcus was an academic administrator at The New School, serving in a variety of positions from 2002 until 2016.

Marcus received a BA from Bennington College and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She focused on ceramics, and apprenticed under ceramicists Peter Callas and George Mason. After working as an administrator at Bennington College from 1996-2002, she moved to The New School.

From 2002-2004, Marcus was Director of Academic Advising; from 2004-2012, she was Director of the Dual-Degree and Joint Programs in the Office of the Provost, where she oversaw the joint BA/BFA program; and from 2012-2016, she was Assistant Provost for University Curriculum. In 2016 she left The New School to become Associate Dean at Brown University.

At The New School, Marcus focused primarily on academic advising and the development of joint academic degree programs. The Office of the Provost, where Marcus worked, played a strong role in the governance of integrated degree programs, courses, and faculty hiring, and she was active on committees focused on all of these issues. She also served on the Media Bridge Committee, which centered on the creation of a New School Media Center.

Scope and Content of Collection

These records pertain to Adrienne Marcus's work in various New School administrative positions from 2002 until 2010. The majority of the files reflect Marcus's role as Director of Academic Advising and, subsequently, Director of the Dual-Degree and Joint Programs. Her role as Assistant Provost is not documented in this record group.

The material relates primarily to Marcus's focus on academic advising and the development of joint academic degree programs. Items related to academic advising include the Advisor Handbook 2003/2004 and a file of policies and reports regarding advising.

More substantial are those items relating to joint academic degree program governance, which Marcus focused on during her tenure as Director of the Dual-Degree and Joint Programs from 2004-2012. This material consists of reports on the establishment and development of integrated degree programs, as well as agenda, minutes, handouts, reports, and memoranda from faculty, dean, and provost retreats. The topic of these retreats is primarily how to facilitate the integration of academic programs from across all schools and university departments

There is also material concerning Marcus's work on the Media Bridge Committee, tasked with the creation of The New School Media Center in 2005.
