Biographical note

Ina Dell Marvin attended the Paris Ateliers of the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now, Parsons The New School for Design) from 1928 to 1931. She received her graduate certificate in Interior Architecture and Decoration in June 1931.

Scope and Contents note

The collection consists of Ina Dell Marvin's student work, comprised of class reference materials, clip books, correspondence, her diploma, an itinerary for a trip to London, lecture notes, photographs, and renderings of furniture, decorative pieces and interior studies.

The class reference materials include various charts, examples of mouldings and other assignments.

The clip books, comprised of notes, sketches, photographs and clippings, illustrate and explore the decorative trends of the Louis XIV and Louis XV periods. An additional clip book illustrates Marvin's observations pertaining to her studies during a tour of Italy.

Correspondence is comprised of excerpts transcribed from letters written by Marvin during the 1930s and the 1970s that discuss her experiences at the Paris Ateliers.

Lecture notes cover the history and evolution of art and architecture, design, and decoration. Instructors identified in the notes consist of: Mildred Irby, C. John Marsman, Madame Nepveu-de Mestchersky, Clifford Hamilton Preston and Helen Sieglin.

Of particular note in this collection is a photograph of Marvin, as well as a photograph of two Paris Ateliers instructors, John Marsman and Mildred Irby.

Renderings include depictions of furniture and decorative pieces from 1930 and interior studies from 1931.
