Adri fashion design business records

Mary Adrienne Steckling (1934-2006) graduated from Parsons School of Design's Fashion Design Department in 1958. In 1966, Adri -- her professional name -- developed her own line and continued designing under her own labels for the rest of her career. In 1982, Adri received the prestigious Coty American Fashion Critics Winnie award. The records document Adri's business and professional life, with materials largely arranged according to year and season. Includes clippings and tear sheets, photographic materials, press kits, presentation portfolios, sketches, swatches, and video recordings.

Albert Hadley papers

Albert Hadley (1920-2012) graduated from Parsons School of Design in 1949 and served on the faculty from 1949 through 1954. Hadley later joined Dorothy "Sister" Parish to form the interior design firm Parish-Hadley. The collection includes correspondence, design and lecture notes, student work and a mock-up for a booklet.

Alice Halicka prints

Alvin Saunders Johnson collection

This collection primarily reflects the activities of Alvin Saunders Johnson during his years as director and president emeritus of the New School for Social Research (1946-1971). The files consist of biographical materials, correspondence, subject files, and writings. Because much of Johnson's work as emeritus revolved around fund raising, the correspondence and subject files largely document this activity. Other projects documented here include Johnson's proposal to establish a labor college at the New School (which never came to pass), and launching a Faculty of Retired Professors. The Writings series includes drafts, typescripts, and reprints from University and non-University publications, documenting Johnson's abiding engagement with social issues, in addition to chapter drafts for his autobiography, Pioneer's Progress (published 1952).

American Race Crisis lecture series audio recordings

The audio recordings and transcripts in this collection document lectures from a 15-part series on the race crisis in the United States, held in the spring of 1964 at The New School, and organized by New School professor Daniel S. Anthony. The speakers in the recordings include Charles Abrams, Algernon D. Black, Dan W. Dodson, Milton A. Galamison, Martin Luther King, Jr., Louis Lomax, Joseph Monserrat, Melvin Tumin, Robert C. Weaver, and Roy Wilkins. Open to the general public, the lectures were held in the auditorium of the school's flagship building at 66 West 12th Street in Greenwich Village. Topics discussed range from the impact of school integration, housing discrimination, affirmative action, the growing Black separatist movement, and motivations for racial prejudice. Dr. King opened the conference, and recording of his talk consists only of the question and answer session following his address.

Amos Parrish fashion merchandising clinic workbook

The workbook that comprises this collection was used during the Amos Parrish Fashion Merchandising Clinic, held in New York City, January 6-10, 1930. Parrish's clinic was offered once and sometimes twice annually from the 1920s through 1955 to forecast the year's trends for the fashion industry. This workbook belonged to Howard Phillips, merchandise manager for the Ernst Kern Department Store, Detroit, Michigan, and was heavily annotated by Phillips during his week at Parrish's clinic.

André and Creators Studios fashion drawings

André and Creators Studios were Seventh Avenue fashion businesses that marketed their designs to clothing manufacturers by subscription. In the mid-1970s Pearl Alexander Lipman, André's co-owner and designer since the 1930s, retired, and the company's design drawings were sold to Creators Studios. The collection consists of reproductions of designs -- some vibrantly hand-colored -- produced and distributed by the two companies between 1937 and 1972.

Andrée Golbin papers

After graduating from Parsons School of Design in 1943, Andrée Golbin (1923-2006) led a long career as a painter, graphic artist and illustrator. In addition to serving as art director for Mademoiselle magazine in the early 1950s, Golbin created artwork for a diverse roster of clients, including several modern dance companies, Henri Bendel, and American Cyanamid. The New School Archives holds examples of Golbin's drawings and completed projects in the form of book jackets, children's books, catalogs, and assorted promotional materials.

Anthony Pellino student work

The collection consists of examples of Anthony Pellino's student art and design work, the bulk of which was completed in 1983, in his first year at Parsons. The notes that appear throughout the collection guide were compiled from notes made by Pellino at the time that he donated his work to the New School Archives.

Architectural plans and drawings for the New School at 66 West Twelfth Street

Originally located in six renovated brownstones on West 21st Street in New York City, The New School for Social Research reopened in 1931 in a newly constructed building at 66 West Twelfth Street in Greenwich Village. The seven-story structure, designed by architect and theatrical designer Joseph Urban (1872-1933), was the first of what would eventually become a three-building complex at the site. The collection consists of design and construction drawings documenting Joseph Urban's original building at 66 West Twelfth Street, construction drawings for the expanded campus in the 1950s, and a small number of plans representing other periods of renovation and expansion at the site.

Arnold Brecht lecture notes

Arnold Brecht (1884-1977) was a political scientist and public servant exiled from Germany after the Nazi's seized power due to his political affiliation and participation in efforts toward constitutional reform. He joined the University in Exile faculty at the New School for Social Research in 1933 where he taught political science, constitutional law, and public service until retiring in 1954. These notebooks contain Brecht's lecture notes and vocabulary words with shorthand, primarily handwritten, along with newspaper clippings used for courses, seminars, and other talks given by Brecht. Many lectures derive from his General Seminar at The New School and talks at Harvard University, World Affairs Club, Brooklyn College and other organizations, including one radio broadcast, "Economic Federalism on Trial," in 1936. Topics range from constitutional law, the history of the United States, Europe (particularly Great Britain, France and Germany), government and politics, economics (particularly price-fixing and taxation law), civil service, and contemporary German politics. It includes seminars for civil service training at Harvard and the New School in 1937.

Arnold Eagle photographs

Arnold Eagle (1909-1992) emigrated to New York from Hungary in 1929. He became a documentary photographer in the 1930s and, in 1945, joined a remarkable roster of photographers hired by Standard Oil of New Jersey to produce a visual record of the benefits of oil in the lives of everyday Americans, and, in the process, creating an extensive photographic record of American life during the 1940s. Later, Eagle's work encompassed subjects ranging from modern dance to corporate workplaces. He also became enamored of filmmaking and worked as a cinematographer and director. In 1955, Eagle joined the faculty of the New School for Social Research, where he taught photography and filmmaking until shortly before his death. The collection consists of black and white photographic prints produced by Eagle, primarily from the 1940s and 1950s. The photos predominantly document landscapes, human labor and machinery at industrial and agricultural sites around the United States, Mexico and Cuba. Industries represented include cabinetry, mining, and mattresses; agricultural operations include sugar cane production.

Arthur J. Vidich papers

Arthur J. Vidich (1922-2006) was a long-term member of the faculty at the New School for Social Research as a professor of Sociology (1960-1991). He published dozens of books, papers, and edited anthologies, notably Small Town in Mass Society: Class, Power, and Religion in a Rural Community (1958). This collection contains material documenting his teaching, writing, public lectures, and other academic and professional activities that spans his entire career, from graduate school at Harvard until his death in 2006. Included are correspondence with colleagues, friends, and presses; manuscript and typescript drafts of his writings; conference and lecture materials; subject files relating to his colleagues and personal life; and items pertaining to his teaching at the New School and other institutions, as well as his role as chair of the New School Sociology Department; photographs; and audio and video recordings of lectures, talks, and courses.

Arthur Segal woodcuts

The collection consists of 68 prints out of a set of 70 from woodcuts created by Romanian-born painter Arthur Segal (1875-1944) between 1912 and 1919. The prints, from Segal's original blocks, were made on handmade paper by William Carter, and published by Richard Nathanson.

Arthur Waldeck papers

Arthur Waldeck (1899-1965) was an important voice teacher in New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. He maintained a studio at Carnegie Hall, and was notoriously systematic in his pedagogical approach. The collection consists of Waldeck's letters to and from renowned music theorist Heinrich Schenker (1868-1935), as well as Waldeck's translations into English and heavily annotated versions of Schenker's work.
